How Your Golf Grip Affects Your Swing
How Your Golf Grip Affects Your Swing

“Good golf begins with a good grip.” Ben Hogan
“A correct grip is a fundamental necessity in the golf swing.” Bobby Jones
“Without a proper grip no player can expect to hit accurate shots with even a fair degree of consistency.” Gary Player
“The grip is the most important single consideration in learning to play winning golf.” Byron Nelson
“A good grip is the one which lets the player hit the most good shots.” Dr. Gary Wiren
When teaching the grip, I look for the four P’s:
- Placement – The placement of the hands on the grip in a vertical axis (how far up and down the shaft is each placed?).
- Positioning – The amount of rotation of the hands clockwise or counterclockwise (generally referred to as “strong” or “weak”).
- Pressure – How hard one is squeezing the club.
- Precision – Either one grips the club in a precise fashion (the same way each time) or is careless about the grip so that it is seldom the same.
From these basics, I work with the student to determine the best grip, then evaluate how the grip works with the student’s natural swinging motion. Trial and error and lots of practice will be required and worth every minute.
