Exploring New Horizons: How Veterans Can Thrive in Golf Course Management
By Bradley Turner, Keiser University College of Golf Executive Director – MBA, PGA
Military Veterans possess a unique set of skills and experiences that make them well-suited for a career in golf management. The discipline, teamwork, and attention to detail instilled during their service transfer seamlessly into the world of golf operations and management. For Veterans transitioning into civilian life, the golf industry presents a unique pathway for professional growth and personal fulfillment. In this article, we explore how Veterans can leverage their skills and experiences to thrive in golf management roles.
Shared Values and Culture
Successful businesses share similar values to the military such as integrity, discipline, teamwork, and respect for others. Veterans bring these shared values with them into the work environment, seamlessly integrating into the established culture of a golf club. Their ability to uphold high standards of professionalism and commitment are attributes sought after by golf industry leaders.
Transferable Skills in Leadership and Management
A productive and effective culture begins with the leadership team in most organizations. Veterans possess the training and experience to lead teams, make crucial decisions under pressure, and effectively communicate with diverse groups. These skills are highly valued in golf course management as the need to encourage and motivate a group of individuals to function as an effective team is vital to success.
Problem Solving and Adaptability
Veterans are accustomed to navigating challenging environments and have become skilled at problem-solving. Adaptability is an essential attribute in golf management where unexpected obstacles arise regularly. Veterans have been exposed to unpredictable situations and these experiences are valuable in golf operations. Factors in the external environment, such as weather conditions, can disrupt standard golf operations, requiring leaders to find innovative solutions.
Attention to Detail
A cornerstone of great management teams is attention to detail in the many aspects of business operations, including exceptional customer service. Customer service is essential for every business, and Veterans have the experience of connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. Their genuine commitment to serving others makes it evident that Veterans can enhance the overall experience for members, patrons, and employees.
The Healing Power of Golf
Beyond the practical employment benefits, positions in golf management can provide a sense of purpose and healing for Veterans adjusting to civilian life. The outdoor environment and physical nature of the work, combined with the opportunities to play golf, can be therapeutic for many Veterans. For Veterans with disabilities or injuries, golf can serve as a powerful tool for rehabilitation. Golf programs such as PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) and the Fairways for Warriors are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of our wounded warriors by teaching them to play golf.
Education Opportunities in Golf Management
The College of Golf at Keiser University is uniquely positioned to offer a wide range of educational opportunities that prepare students for employment in the golf industry. The College of Golf offers several different programs that can meet the needs of transitioning Veterans. The Golf Management program offers an associate’s degree and bachelor’s degree, which prepares students for employment opportunities in golf operations and management. The College of Golf launched a Turfgrass Management program in January of 2024, which focuses on the maintenance and care of golf courses and related turf fields.
Finally, for those who are seeking an advanced degree, there is a Master’s degree in Golf Teaching and Learning available for those who have completed their bachelor’s degree and have the desire to teach others the game of golf.
Veterans bring a wealth of skills, values, and experience that align with golf facility management. Through their leadership, dedication, and passion for giving back to others, Veterans can continue to make significant contributions to the growth and success of the golf industry. As Veterans embark on new careers beyond their military service, the opportunities to transition into golf management and related fields within the industry can pave the way for a brighter future both on and off the golf course.
