Students Fill Important Role At Honda Classic Pro-AM
Forty students from Keiser University College of Golf & Sport Management will caddy for amateur players in The Honda Classic Pro-Am event on Wednesday, February 25th.
Their duties include carrying their player’s golf bag (of course), charting yardages, reading greens, raking bunkers, and advising their players on shot selection.
While caddying is not as large a part of the game as it was historically before the introduction of golf cars, it is still an integral part of the great game of golf.
Caddies abound on the professional tours, and those caddies who work for the top echelon of professional players earn a handsome income and share in an exciting partnership during Tour competitions and in major championships.
While the old adage of how to caddy successfully may apply in certain situations (“show up, keep up, and shut up”), it is not the suggested method of earning your player’s trust during a round of golf.
Dr. Eric Wilson, PGA Master Professional and Executive Director of Golf Operations, and Brian Hughes, PGA Master Professional and Golf Program Director, provided caddy training to students on Friday at The PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance.
Dr. Wilson caddied for Keiser University College of Golf Adjunct Instructor Ken Martin, PGA Professional Certified in Instruction and General Management, in the 2011 and 2012 Senior PGA Championships, and Brian Hughes caddied for Bobby Clampett in the 2013 Honda Classic Qualifying event and for Ken Martin in the 2014 U.S. Senior Open.
The training covered the basic requirements of caddying and the many nuances and tips that Dr. Wilson and Mr. Hughes acquired during their stints on the bags during professional tour events.
