Six Reasons to Become a Member of the PGA of America

By Bradley Turner, Keiser University College of Golf Executive Director – MBA, PGA

The world of golf is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life for those passionate about pursuing a career in the golf industry. The golf industry has enjoyed unprecedented growth in rounds played by golfers in America over the past few years. The thriving industry offers a multitude of career paths for passionate golfers. One career path is the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America, which is a cornerstone of the entire industry. The PGA of America boasts close to 30,000 members and apprentices and is the largest sports association in the world. Becoming a member of the PGA of America is a decision that opens doors to a world of opportunities, growth, and fulfillment. In this article, I will delve into the important reasons why individuals should consider embarking on a journey to PGA membership.

#1 Prestige of Being a PGA Professional

At the foundation of the PGA of America lies a commitment to professionalism and excellence. Membership in the PGA signifies more than just a passion for golf; it’s a seal of approval that one has completed specific training, education, and testing to become a certified golf professional. This certification not only enhances an individual’s credibility but also affords them recognition among colleagues, employers, and the broader golf community. For members and patrons of the many golf facilities in America, having a PGA member on staff instills a sense of pride and confidence that the club will enjoy a high level of character and competence in their PGA professional.

#2 Personal Growth and Education

Education is the foundation of personal and professional growth, and the PGA of America takes this principle to heart. The association provides a broad array of education and training programs designed to hone the skills of aspiring golf professionals. From golf instruction techniques to course management strategies, members have access to a wealth of knowledge that empowers them to excel in their chosen careers. These programs evolve alongside the sport, ensuring the members have the knowledge and skills for future success.

#3 Enjoy Tournament Competition

Many PGA professionals have played competitive golf. Most started as junior golfers or members of the high school golf team. Some progressed to college golf, and a few elite PGA members competed on the PGA or LPGA Tours. The PGA of America provides competitive playing opportunities for its members, which enables professionals to participate in high-quality events in their local PGA Section. The PGA is divided into 41 sections, each hosting a full calendar of events. As we saw this past May at the PGA Championship, PGA member Michael Block held his own against the best in the world, finishing 15th and taking home $288,333. Not a bad week for a club professional who spends most of his days on the range helping others play the game.

#4 Impacting Your Golf Community

In addition to individual growth opportunities, the PGA of America champions the growth and development of the game itself. As a member, one becomes an advocate for golf, contributing to its expansion and positive impact on communities. The organization is dedicated to raising awareness, promoting inclusivity, and supporting initiatives that make golf accessible to a wider audience. By becoming a PGA member, individuals become ambassadors for their golf community by fostering the growth of the sport through game improvement programs, tournament activities, and general golf education seminars.

#5 Networking and Career Opportunities

The allure of a career in the golf industry lies not only in its connection to the sport but also in the diverse array of opportunities it offers. Becoming a PGA member opens doors to various career paths, allowing individuals to find their niche within the industry. In any professional journey, the power of networking cannot be understated. The PGA of America fosters a community of like-minded individuals who share a common passion for golf. Being a member of this community provides opportunities for networking, mentorship, and collaboration. Whether one aspires to be a golf instructor, club manager, tournament coordinator, or golf retail specialist, the PGA provides the platform to explore and excel in these roles. This diversity ensures that each member can find a career that aligns with their skills and long-term aspirations.

#6 Passion for the Game and Personal Satisfaction

Passion for the game of golf is a primary driver in the decision to become a PGA of America member. PGA professionals work on the weekends and holidays, ensuring that patrons and members of their facilities have a great time on the golf course. The person who will enjoy great personal satisfaction in their career as a golf professional is someone who wants to hang out at the golf course when their work shift is done. If there is daylight, there is time for golf.

How to Become a PGA Professional

The first step in becoming a PGA professional is to secure employment at a recognized golf facility that employs a PGA member. The next step is to pass the playing ability test, which is a 36-hole test that requires participants to shoot a pre-determined 36-hole score. The passing score is 15 strokes above the course rating over the two rounds. If the course rating is 71.5, then over two rounds, the combined course rating is 143 plus 15, which sets the passing score of 158. Once the playing ability test is completed, it is a matter of completing the required coursework and sufficient months working for a PGA member.
