11 Ways to Keep Your Golf Game in Shape in the Winter

By Bradley Turner Keiser University College of Golf Director of Online Instruction – MBA, PGA

Are you playing golf this winter? Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to head south for a week and spend plenty of time on the golf course with family and friends. But if you are going to be shoveling snow and keeping the fireplace stoked, what can you do to keep the fire burning with your golf game? As a long-time PGA member and an original resident of Michigan, I know a few things about keeping up with your golf game in the winter. This article will share 11 suggestions to get you in prime shape when the golf courses open this spring.

  1. Practice Your Putting Indoors

This is the easiest and most effective activity to keep up with your golf game this winter. I suggest investing in some putting mats to make your practice sessions more effective. The Perfect Putting Mat is a good product as it provides lines on the mat to help you “see the line.” A low-budget putting mat uses two yoga mats pushed together to give a nice flat and true surface to practice. I use that in my garage, and I can get some quality practice done without leaving the house.

  1. Go to the Gym

Yes… This is good for more than your golf game. What else are you going to do when there is a foot of snow on the ground? Just keep imagining hitting that par five in two shots. That should keep you motivated to go to the gym.

  1. Play Golf Video Games

Sure…why not? It is fun and challenging, and you can play some outstanding golf courses with some of these video games. It may just satisfy your golf addiction until the grass starts to grow again. When the golf season arrives, you will have seen many great shots over the winter on your laptop or smartphone, so your confidence should be sky-high.

  1. Do Yoga

Yoga is excellent for golf. It will build strength and increase your flexibility. For those that have never tried yoga, you might be surprised by the challenge of this discipline. Yoga may be the best activity for golfers to overcome any physical limitations they may have. It is amazing what will happen to your range of motion and overall fitness for golf after six dedicated weeks of yoga!

5. Listen to Golf Podcasts

In previous articles, I have provided some recommended golf podcasts that can help keep your mind focused on your golf game. Numerous PGA golf coaches love sharing their thoughts on the many topics related to your game.

  1. Perfect Your Grip at Home

Speaking on behalf of every golf coach, please make the necessary adjustments to your golf grip this winter. While watching golf on TV, put a golf club in your hands the proper way. You do not need to hit anything; just move the club around. After about two weeks of watching weekend golf on television, that proper grip that feels so uncomfortable will be…comfortable. Golf coaches across America are counting on you to make this happen.

  1. Practice Your Golf Swing in the Mirror

The use of a mirror can provide you feedback on the swing adjustments your PGA golf coach has suggested. Do not make a go of changing your swing alone. Expert coaching is vital to ensure that what you are looking at in the mirror is what you need to be doing on the golf course.

  1. Strengthen Your Golf Swing with Weighted Clubs

By following a program that includes swinging a weighted golf club as fast as possible, you will see an increase in club head speed. I suggest you consult a physical trainer or your favorite PGA golf coach before getting too involved in speed training. If you plan to use weighted clubs to strengthen your swing, follow a proven program to get you where you want to go.

  1. Find an Indoor Driving Range

Many indoor driving range facilities are opening across the country, providing golfers with plenty of opportunities to practice this winter. With 180 indoor training studios, GolfTec is another option for indoor practice. They have many PGA golf coaches and indoor practice programs available to fit your budget and golf needs.

  1. Watch Golf on TV

Watch golf on TV and work on your grip. Then bring out your putting mat for some practice. A modified yoga session in front of the television is a good idea too. While watching golf on TV, make some swings with the weighted golf club. You can get a lot accomplished while watching golf on TV.

  1. Stay Focused on Your Golf Goals

You will need to have some golf goals to stay focused on your golf goals. Winter is the perfect time to lay the groundwork for your best golf season. A good rule of thumb is to use the handicap system as the benchmark for your goals. Good research suggests a player can cut their handicap in half with diligent work and some quality coaching from a PGA golf coach. For example, a 36-handicap golfer could reduce their handicap to 18 in one golf season, while an 8 handicap could shave off 4 strokes. If you want to get better, plenty of PGA professionals are ready to help make that happen.

Winter is the perfect time to make some changes in your golf game. Write down some realistic golf goals for this year and review them periodically this winter while you watch the best in the world play on television. By applying the 11 suggestions in this article, you will be well prepared to start the new golf season in prime form and enjoy your best golf ever.
