The Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup is being held this weekend and is proving to be an entertaining competition. The U.S. Team takes a slim lead (3 ½ to 2 ½) into Friday’s round, and U.S. Presidents Cup captain Davis Love III found a new friend – Sammy the Squirrel (see picture below). The U.S. holds an overall record of 7 wins, 1 loss (1998 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia), and 1 tie (2003 at The Links at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club in South Africa). Davis Love is under pressure to continue the U.S. streak of not losing on its home turf, as the U.S. team competes over the pristine links of Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Friday’s round of foursome (alternate shot) golf will test the mettle of the competitors, and Saturday’s double round will test the stamina of both teams. The finishing 12 singles matches on Sunday should produce some exciting golf, and hopefully another victory for the U.S. Team. As mentioned on The Presidents Cup official website, the event will be broadcast in 225 countries and territories, in 30 different languages, to nearly 800 million homes worldwide. In 2011, the PGA TOUR donated than $4.5 million to charities, bringing the total to more than $27 million since the Cup’s inception in 1994. As one of the last major golf events of the year, the Presidents Cup should generate an enormous amount of interest among golf fans. Let’s hope the U.S. can continue its record at home and bring home the trophy once again.
