What Does A Career In Golf Course Management Entail

Is a Career in Golf Course Management for You?

Running a golf course is no easy task. It takes a lot of knowledge and time to get everything looking beautiful, as well as making sure all aspects are functional and timed just right. With any management position, you have to be on your toes and be prepared for whatever comes your way. So, if you think a career in golf course management is for you, here are a few of the responsibilities you will have.

Maintaining the Golf Course

When maintaining the golf course, the manager has many aspects to factor in. You want to make sure your greens are making the grade. You must manage shrinking greens and greens that are under stress. You will want to have the turf grass for the players at its optimal level – basically, anything that needs to be done to the grass to ensure the slopes, fairways, and all greens are on the up and up for the region the golf course is in.

Keeping up with Bunkers and Roughs

You will also have to select the right grade of sand for your bunkers. You will be selecting the sand based on purity and shape – however, if you make the wrong choice, you will have to know how to remove the sand without compromising the bunker. Maintaining natural areas and water sources such as ponds will also be a priority.

Golf Course Management

Trees

Making sure you know your trees and what special needs they may have is going to save you a lot of time when managing a golf course. While golfers can hate trees at times, for you, it will have to be the opposite. You want your trees to represent your golf course, so make sure you have a care system in place for them.

Irrigation

Golf courses provide beautiful outdoor settings. To keep the course thriving, you will have to make sure you have sprinkler systems and that you are watering the grounds by hand that require that special attention.

Staff

Be sure your staff understands the importance of their jobs and how to properly maintain a golf course. You don’t want to have to go behind everyone, correcting mistakes. This will only take away from your time, and eventually, it will take away from the overall upkeep of the course.

Is It for You?

As you can see, golf course management requires a lot of knowledge, a green thumb, and an understanding of the game and the importance of its arena. If you have all of these qualities, you can go very far in this career. Want to start preparing for a rewarding career in golf course management?
